Preparation for Emergency
Plan Ahead! Create a Family Emergency Plan and include these items for the home:
- At least three, and preferably seven day’s supply of water (one gallon of water per day per family member)
- If on well water, fill bath tubs for water to flush toilets
- At least three, and preferably seven day’s supply of ready to eat, non perishable food
- Manual can opener
- Extra cash on hand (no power=no debit machines or banks)
- Extra blankets and warm clothes
- First Aid kit
- Toiletries, disposable cleaning cloths and hygiene supplies
- Ample supply of prescription medications
- Tools, flashlights and extra batteries
- Battery operated radio
- Gasoline level at full in vehicles
- Special needs items for infant care, items for elderly family members, items for relatives with special needs, items for pets such as food
- A paper list of important phone numbers (physicians, utility companies, relatives, etc.)
- Important family documents in a water tight case
- Have a backup sump pump and a backup battery power supply
- Up to date fire extinguishers
- Cell phones with chargers
- Teach family members to use text messages during an emergency
Important Tips to Remember
- Stay off the roads until authorities determine and broadcast that it is safe to be out
- All downed wires should be treated as if they are “live” with electricity
- Do no drive around barricades
- Report downed wires with pole numbers to the utility company
- During prolonged and wide spread power outages, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will open, as needed, warming or cooling centers, informational and charging centers and overnight shelters
- Check on your neighbors regularly, especially the elderly or those with special needs
- Use your car to charge your cell phone
- Do not use your gas stove for heat
- Do not use camp stoves or grills indoors
- Locate generators at least 10 feet from the house, and never use them in an enclosed area such as a garage
- Always turn off the motor before filling a generator
- Keep refrigerator and freezer closed to maintain the cold. If in doubt, throw it out.
- Frozen water bottles in your freezer will act as ice blocks to keep food frozen longer.
- If you smell gas, open windows, evacuate and call your utility company immediately
- Know the location and how to shut off gas and water valves at home
- Have books and games for children
